Halloween History and Traditions: Devils, Witches, Demons and Ghouls

Most people have a sense that the history of Halloween was not rooted in fun-sized candy and princess costumes but few really know that Halloween has both Celtic and Christian origins dating back thousands of years.

Halloween was initially a holiday called Samhain, celebrated over 2,000 years ago by the Celtic people. Since their calendar year began on November 1st, Halloween was like New Year’s Eve. The holiday was celebrated with animal sacrifices and the wearing of animal skins.
In Christian history, November 1st was designated as All Saint’s Day in order to celebrate Christian saints and martyrs. It is believed that Pope Boniface IV chose the date in order to replace Samhain, the pagan holiday. All Saint’s Day eventually became known as All Hallow’s Day, making October 31st “All Hallow’s Eve.” Food was left on doorsteps for the spirits of those who had passed on. This custom eventually evolved into trick-or-treating.
During the 19th Century, Halloween was popularized as a holiday to celebrate with food and costumes until the 20th Century when it was largely recognized as a recreational holiday, no longer tied to religion.
Did you know? Sneezing on Halloween used to be forbidden. It was believed that a piece of your soul was blown out during a sneeze and could be snatched up on Halloween when spirits and demons were on the loose.
